Proposal

For my section of our WRT 205 paper I plan to investigate how the employees differ at the Second Story Bookstore on Westcott Avenue and at Barnes and Noble Bookstore on Erie Blvd. I plan to focus the paper on how management/ownership forces its employees to alter their appearances in order to fit the ideal of the company. The paper will go into different necessary requirements for employment at the two stores, what restrictions the ownership imposes on its employees, and how the employees feel about their respective employers, plus if possible pay rates and benefits offered. I plan on accomplishing this by going to the two stores and trying to interview the employees and management/ownership. I expect that the management at Second Story are more apathetic about their employee’s appearance while employees at Barnes and Noble are morel likely force to remove any suggestive piercings or other irregular hairdos and to hide tattoos. Also I imagine that the managers of the Westcott location will be more willing to share their employee information than the ones at Barnes and Noble and employees enjoy working more at Second Story than at Barnes and Noble because they are free of personality restrictions

I like this topic!! If i was doing it i would investigate if people that work for the Big Business on Erie are getting paid more than the small business on Westcott. I would also try to investiage if the people that work on Erie are happier than the people that work on Westcott or if it is the other way around. I know that that might be a hard thing to do, but it would be cool if you could get some sort of idea about it.

The employees would be really good to talk to, you can get a feel for their work environment and whether or not they are happy with it. The way workers are being treated is really important. Sometimes in big businesses people just become numbers and lose their identities within hte company. I also wonder which workers get more benefits and better vacations ect.

I think this does def. tie into an aspect of what we are trying to do. the contrast is really clear when you look at the girl from Dorian's and the people that worked in Taco Bell and Pizza Hut. She seems so much happier and she said it in our video that she would take a small business any day over a big corp. the lady that worked at pizza hut looked miserable and was a mess.
